I'm trying to do the simplest tasks and they are nearly impossible in GIMP! It's so frustrating!

Well put. If the Open Source community doesn't fix these issues (and issues like them) then they don't deserve widespread adoption.

This should be priority.

"Gimp is [...] easy on memory"

BAHAHAHAHA

Try having 50-100 layers. Then you'll see how "easy" GIMP is.

I'm so glad that other people agree with me. I pretty much hate everything about GIMP.

Lately I found out things that are so horrible and stupid in GIMP, it's unbearable. I hope that someday the not so expensive PSE will have Paths included, then I will immediately invest my money there.

I want to apologize. I have spend a lot of time with GIMP lately and found out that:

Almost any features of photoshop are available in GIMP too - BUT it is arranged in a way that you can waste a lot of time to achieve the same things like in PS. E.g. the realtime preview in GIMP is very slow, if you got any at all. This forces you to reinvent the wheel each time once you've made an error. The important Bevel/Emboss Layer properties are only available via plugin which sux. They should be made native to GIMP. One advantage however is GIMP shows you how all these "cool" Layer Effects from PS are made.
I would even go so far to say that: I think you could learn more about image processing in GIMP than in PS. Besides the menus in GIMP are more logically arranged, e.g. if you want to change the layer size, picture size, look for colors: in GIMP you exactly know which of the main menus you need to click - but in PS this doesn't apply.

This however is not enough to make the use of GIMP much more comfortable, neither superior. The usability lacks enormously. Have you ever tried to create warped text etc. - it works in GIMP too, but the way to achieve this with Paths etc. is horrible.

GIMP needs a lot of work for the User Interface, how things are arranged, and realtime previews. THe potential is there, but I'm afraid no one cares to make it userfriendly :(

@irlandes:

I have never used Photoshop. I have only used GIMP. And, I can still tell that GIMP sucks terribly, because I am smart enough to understand how things *should* behave, and GIMP does not behave that way.

I have been using Linux since 1999. I have noted several things. 80 year old grandma's can use Linux, but the best Windows experts can't, and that is no coincidence. Once a person learns something really well, it's very hard to learn something different, well. Ditto for PS vs. GIMP. Professionals have posted on Linux forums that they use GIMP in their professional shops. Three or so years ago, a high school photo teacher in Australia started half his students on GIMP and half on PS. Halfway through he switched them and the screams of rage were the same from both groups. So, I am not surprised a PS expert does not like GIMP. You don't like GIMP, don't use GIMP, but please spare us the whining and childish insults.
