Updates and a quick post

All those people wanting me to actually put something on my About page (as well as contact details) have had their wishes fulfilled!

Also, over on Slashdot right now there is some amusing idiocy about Microsoft apparently corrupting the legislative process, buying governments etc. because it is trying to get a law changed in its favour.  Normally I wouldn’t be in favour of this behaviour but here is the law:

Under current law, all of Microsoft’s worldwide licensing revenues of approximately $20.7 billion annually are taxable at .484 percent.

Yep, that’s right, Washington State want nearly 0.5% of Microsoft’s total revenue.  Not profit, revenue.  That’s 0.5% of global revenue.

What if each American State decided it wanted a piece of this action – it’s only fair after all.  That would mean near 25% of Microsoft’s revenue would suddenly dissappear overnight.  Since there are what (~250 ish) countries in the world – lets be fair they deserve the right to the tax just as much as WS – that is 145% of revenue Microsoft would have to pay in ‘taxes’.

What Microsoft want is to pay taxes on what they sell in the state, not in the whole world, which to me seems perfectly reasonable.  But who am I to get in the way of a groundless bash-fest by the idiots on Slashdot?

Edit: I am an idiot, Redmond is in Washington.  They still should not be able to tax items sold in a different country simply because MS has a presence there.

  1. Taxing is just another way to fight M$’s illegal activities. Funny how they have to resort to even more illegal activities to legalize their original illegal activities.

  2. Funny* how Queefer is less and less coherent which each passing sentence.

    * = in honour of queefer’s freetardation, I have refeined “funny” to mean “sad”.

  3. Blah blah blah I can’t refute it blah blah blah I just shoot the messenger blah blah blah I take Ballmer’s cock up my ass. Same old hatetard shit.

  4. Blah blah blah blah blah blah

It’s so much better when you say what you mean!

    I can’t refute it

    There’s nothing to refute.

    I just shoot the messenger

Who’s messenger? The voices in your head?
Do you even know what the expression means? On who’s behalf are you speaking, if not your own?

take Ballmer’s cock up my ass

Thanks for sharing, I will sleep comfortably tonight now that I know of your homoerotic Ballmer fantasies.

You were at least mildly amusing when you tried, you know.

  5. You are such a dumbass Adam. How many other companies do you boycott for immoral behaviour? Unless you grow and sew everything you have yourself you are no doubt contributing much more to companies a lot worse.

You’re the FOSS equivelant of PETA, some idiot that’s latched on to some minor, unimportant, cause (while ignoring all others) who then promotes it to the most important thing in their lives.

The only argument you’ve ever made for FOSS being better is a moral one – but unfortunatley real people have actual real moral causes to fight that affect real people rather than trying to take the work of others for free and calling it ‘freedom’ (and pretending like it’s important).

  6. Free software is better not only on moral grounds but in terms of quality as well. Take a look at the code of any free software project and compare it to the code of windows oh wait, you can’t get it, because M$ hides it from you. In that case look at how terribly bloated windows is in comparison to linux. If that doesn’t convince you, then there’s more to your love of M$ than just software preference.

  7. @Adam King
“Free software is better not only on moral grounds but in terms of quality as well. Take a look at the code of any free software project and compare it to the code of windows oh wait, you can’t get it, because M$ hides it from you.” You just debunk your own argument, because you can’t say it’s better than windows, because you couldn’t look at the source code. Are you retarded? Or outflat dumb?
    @Kerberos
I have tried to email you, but you never seemed to reply to me. Is it because your too busy or something?

  8. I can know the code is inferior by looking at the finished product. The degree to which windows blue screens and eats your battery life is outdone only by the hatetards that try to defend it. The fact that M$ refuses to give you their code is just proof of their malicious intensions.

  9. “I can know the code is inferior by looking at the finished product” The “hatetards” here use the apply the same thing when it it comes to Linux. “The degree to which windows blue screens and eats your battery life is outdone only by the hatetards that try to defend it.” LAMO are you in the 90′s still or something? The blue screen of death is so old. Battery life? Are you implying that Linux never eats any battery life? “The fact that M$ refuses to give you their code is just proof of their malicious intentions.” When pwnd scream “CONSPIRACY!”

  10. I would strongly suggest that the owner of the blog would ban Adam Queef, since he resorts to nothing, but trolling. Let us hope that some decent knowledgeable FOSS advocate would come here. Cause this is just too easy.

  11. The closest thing to a decent FOSS advocate that comes here is Thomas B. And he isn’t that great either (at least he’s not traumatised like queefer).

  12. Yeah, ban the freedom advocate why don’t you?

  13. Adam, you don’t know fuck-all about freedom. It’s not even possible to visit your website with an open source browser, and you ban people based on IP address or cookies when they visit your site with a browser user agent indicating Windows.

Are you even for real? It wouldn’t surprise me if Stallman publicly disapproved of your contraproductive attitude. You are either one of the worst trolls ever, or just plain crazy and delusional.

  14. “The degree to which windows blue screens and eats your battery life is outdone only by the hatetards that try to defend it.”

Would that be the battery life achieved by OSes that actually implement the ACPI spec properly as opposed to those that can’t like Linux. See, as an example, CPU Throttling Disabled on CPU1 after Resume (https://lists.linux-foundation.org/pipermail/bugme-new/2008-May/018772.html). Yes, that is a 2 year old bug, but it is unclear to me whether it is resolved. Furthermore, could you imagine the fury unleashed by the basement dweller legion if that bug happened on Windows.

  15. “The degree to which windows blue screens and eats your battery life is outdone only by the hatetards that try to defend it.”

Blue-screens? Have you been under a rock? The days of three bluescreens a day (if you were very unlucky) were over more than a decade ago.

I have to admit you can still make Windows blue-screen; for example, sleep a laptop (you’d have to be using Windows for that, not Linux), remove the hard drive, then resume the laptop. Or task kill CSRSS.EXE as an admin. Instant BSOD.

However, fatal errors are not unique to Windows. Try booting from a Mac OSX 10.5 install DVD on a 10.6-era MacBook Pro and watch Mac OSX shit in its pants. Mac OSX panics enough that Apple got an artist to make a nice screen to cover it up and tell you in six languages that you need to reboot. There was even an issue in Fedora a few years back that would cause a hard lockup by someone pulling out the network cable, which Windows 95 would survive without even flinching.

If Linux is so stable, why do kernel panics still fucking exist? You’d think the “panic()” code (that does fuck all for troubleshooting compared to a Windows BSOD) would have been ripped out to keep the kernel lean and mean?

At least Windows can blame sloppy 3rd party drivers. Where is Linux’s stringent QA on all the drivers incorporated into the kernel when it goes tits up without warning?

“The fact that M$ refuses to give you their code is just proof of their malicious intensions.”

What malicious intentions would those be? That Microsoft employ tens of thousands to create their software, and those employees would like to be paid?

  16. 1234Swordy – I am literally working 20 hours a day at the mo trying to get some stuff finished – I’ll get back to you shortly.

As for banning it’s not a route I like to go down – once you start, where do you stop? I don’t want this to end up like the Ubuntuforums, cleansed of all dissent. And more importantly Adam getting owned constantly serves as a good example of the idiocy of the FOSS movement and provides a refuation of it’s manifesto to anyone who happens to wander by.

  17. Take a look at the code of any free software project and compare it to the code of windows oh wait, you can’t get it, because M$ hides it from you.

    Shared Source, NDA, etc.

And regarding quality, have you ever looked at the kernel’s source? Finding comments like “does this belong here?” doesn’t inspire much confidence.

Further, are you seriously going to argue that stuff like Gimp, Inkscape, and Cinelera are of better quality than their commercial counterparts Photoshop, Illustrator/DRAW and
    Premiere/FCP?
. In that case look at how terribly bloated windows is in comparison to linux

I thought you said MS hides shit from you so you can’t m ake the comparison. Either way, NT doesn’t try to be everything at once, Linux does. Linus himself has said that Linux is bloated, pardon me if I’m willing to take his word over yours.

The degree to which windows blue screens and eats your battery life is outdone

    a) Linux doesn’t bluescreen because it’s actually not advanced enough to do so (it will once KMS makes mainline, mind you). It just panics with no message instead.
    b) You can say this with a straight face given the sad state of ACPI support on Linux? (are Linux lappies able to wake from sleep yet?)

The fact that M$ refuses to give you their code is just proof of their malicious intensions.

Of course it is. Baseless conjecture is wonderful, isn’t it?

I would strongly suggest that the owner of the blog would ban Adam Queef, since he resorts to nothing, but trolling.

As Kerberos said. We’re not freetards, we don’t censor. Freedom od expression, FTW.

  18. I find it deliciously ironic that Adam promotes “freedom” in the “free as in speech” context, yet he censors his blog and redirects anyone running Windows. So much for free speech, he does everything in his power to squash it.

  19. Oddly enough, I seem to be unable to access Adam’s blog, too.

  20. Nevermind, I used a proxy and got past everything. Adam hasn’t posted anything since November 25, 2009, so you guys aren’t missing anything.

  21. Proxy seems a bit much when setting the UA to “QUEEFER LOVES THE COCK” or some such works just as well.

  22. He blocks Android phones too. What an idiot.

  23. “Nevermind, I used a proxy and got past everything. Adam hasn’t posted anything since November 25, 2009, so you guys aren’t missing anything.”

Or you can just hit STOP before his crappy cut-and-paste-and-still-get-wrong script can do the redirect.

We weren’t missing anything even before the YTMND crap. Adam is the worst kind of “I’m right, you’re wrong” idiot.

    Here’s the big question for Adam and all the other ABM Linux Youth;

If Microsoft’s products are so bad, why is so much effort expended in the FOSS world to copy them?

  24. He blocks Android phones too. What an idiot.

    LOLOCAUST!

If Microsoft’s products are so bad, why is so much effort expended in the FOSS world to copy them?

Didn’t you get the memo? Copying is innovation.

  25. Much of the software in the FOSS world goes above and beyond M$’s.

    Firefox > IE
    Emesen > Windows Live Messenger

Speaking of Windows Live, who else here thinks the fact that M$ completely gave up on their programs like Windows Mail, Windows Calendar, and all of this other stuff, and the introduced Windows Live Mail, and Windows Live Calendar? When I got Vista and tried to set up Windows Mail to use my Hotmail account, it wouldn’t work! How gay is that?

  26. IE 8 is actualy better in some areas than firefox.
Windows Live Messenger is a pile of shit I’ll give you that, but the only thing Emesene has over it is the lack of advertisement, it’s little more than a clone. (Adium for Mac OSX is probably the best IM I’ve used).

A for the windows live stuff, mind telling us WHY it didn’t work? It’s not like hotmail does any particular check to see what’s accessing it, it could simply be that windows mail had a bug or something and an update to hotmail broke it.

And they didn’t give up on their programs, the live thing is just a name, much like windows live messenger is just a newer windows messenger, and windows live movie maker is just a newer windows movie maker.

Also vista sucks, upgrade to 7. Microsoft has a very predictable release cycle for desktop versions:
    95 – good
    98 – bad
    98 SE – good
    ME – bad
    XP – good
    Vista – bad
    7 – good

  27. No, Windows Mail just didn’t work with Hotmail, intentionally, because MS wanted everyone to get Windows Live Mail.

Windows 7 is a very nice operating system in my opinion. It’s a great improvement over both Vista and XP. But give Windows 7 time and soon it will get all of the software bloat, vulnerabilities, and all of the other flaws other versions of Windows have.

  28. “Edit: I am an idiot, Redmond is in Washington. They still should not be able to tax items sold in a different country simply because MS has a presence there.”

Maybe they want to overcome the curious phenomenon where things are sold at cost to a fiscal heaven subsidiary, which is able to resell (miraculously) with 300% margin…

I do *not* know if MS is guilty of this, but it is fairly standard practice for multinationals.

Anyway, the real estate market is dead, the state is desperate, it’s time for short term emergency measures, forget the long term consequences…

  29. “But give Windows 7 time and soon it will get all of the software bloat, vulnerabilities, and all of the other flaws other versions of Windows have.”

I’m sorry but it works the other way around, Vista SP1 was a massive improvement over the original.

You were right about mail though, total laziness + dick move, although I see no problem in updating to windows live mail.

  30. Thank you for putting some information on the About page on your site, Kerberos. I’m thrilled to be able to contact you… now to think of something worthwhile to send you :)

Maybe at lunch. Take care and keep up the good work!
