Windows Live Messenger is a pile of shit I'll give you that, but the only thing Emesene has over it is the lack of advertisement, it's little more than a clone. It's not like hotmail does any particular check to see what's accessing it, it could simply be that windows mail had a bug or something and an update to hotmail broke it. And they didn't give up on their programs, the live thing is just a name, much like windows live messenger is just a newer windows messenger, and windows live movie maker is just a newer windows movie maker. Also vista sucks, upgrade to 7.
